Neighbourhood Guide
A local’s guide to Singapore’s historic Malay-Arab quarter — Sultan Mosque, Haji Lane, Arab Street, and the charcoal grills that made this district the city’s home of Turkish dining. Written from our corner at 257 Beach Road.
The District
Kampong Gelam — often spelled Kampong Glam — is Singapore’s historic Malay-Arab quarter, and Arab Street, Haji Lane and Beach Road all sit inside it.
Kampong Gelam has fed travellers for two hundred years. Traders, pilgrims and merchants moving between the Middle East and Southeast Asia settled around the Sultan Mosque, and the shophouses along Arab Street, Bussorah Street and Baghdad Street became kitchens serving the food they missed — grilled meats, slow stews, and small shared plates.
Today it is Singapore’s undisputed home for Middle-Eastern dining and Turkish food. Within a five-minute walk you will find more charcoal grills than anywhere else in the city — and at night, when the mosque dome glows and the terraces fill, there is nowhere in Singapore with an atmosphere quite like it.
LAYALI sits at the district’s front door: 257 Beach Road, on the corner where Beach Road meets the entry to Arab Street — charcoal-fired and open daily until 1:00am.
The golden-domed heart of the district since 1824 — 3 minutes’ walk from our door. Visit at dusk, when the dome catches the last light, then follow the smell of charcoal to dinner.
Singapore’s most-photographed lane — murals, indie boutiques and cafés. Best explored in the late afternoon before the evening crowd arrives.
Textile shops, carpet sellers, perfumeries and the famous shophouse row. The pedestrian stretch of Bussorah Street turns into an open-air dining room every evening.
Bugis MRT (EW12/DT14) is a 5-minute walk; Nicoll Highway (CC5) is 9 minutes. Buses along Beach Road stop almost at our corner. Paid parking at Golden Landmark and Textile Centre nearby.
The Food
Adana, shish, lamb chops and mixed grills over real charcoal — the signature cooking of this neighbourhood since its earliest kitchens.
Hummus, ezme, haydari, vine leaves and warm bread — the way dinner starts in Istanbul, and on Beach Road.
The vertical spit turns all day; a shawarma sandwich on a Kampong Gelam evening is a local rite of passage.
Baklava, sizzling künefe, and coffee brewed slowly in the cezve — the district’s traditional full stop.
Open daily 10:00am – 1:00am
Breakfast kahvaltı to late-night kebabs — the district’s longest kitchen hours.
Terrace, banquet floor & lounge
Alfresco terrace, grand banquet floor for 20–200, and the private Sultan’s Lounge.
